North East MEP Fiona Hall, Leader of the Liberal Democrat in the European Parliament, has attacked the failure to produce an effective global deal at the Copenhagen Climate Change Summit:

"COP 15 will stop climate change no more than Munich stopped World War II.

"After months of wrangling, we're still no further forward.

"China won't open up for scrutiny, America offered too little and the world's most vulnerable citizens are more exposed than ever.

"President Obama left Copenhagen heralding a deal that many leaders had not read, let alone signed.

"He says it's an historical step forward, but it's actually another step towards the climate change cliff.

"The politicians have let down the people.

"They will surely pay a price."
