Fiona's work in the European Parliament

In the European Parliament Fiona is a member of the Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) and Development Committees and the Election Co-ordination Group. She was also a member of the Temporary Committee on Climate Change (CLIM). In the Industry, Research and Energy Committee (ITRE)

Most of Fiona's work in the European Parliament takes place in this committee. In the last five years she has drafted three reports on behalf of the ITRE committee and has been the leading negotiator (Rapporteur) for the European Parliament on the following dossiers:

  • On the Selection and Authorisation of systems providing mobile satellite services (MSS) (March 2008, report and speech)

  • The European Parliament's report on an Action Plan for Energy Efficiency: Realising the Potential (January 2008, report and speech)

  • Radio Spectrum - A market based approach to spectrum management in the European Union (December 2006, report)

In addition, Fiona has also been appointed as leading negotiator (Shadow Rapporteur) for her political group, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), eight times in the past five years. On behalf of ALDE, she is currently working on the repeal of the GSM directive and an update of the Directive on the Energy Performance of Buildings. In December 2008, Fiona shadowed the Directive on the Promotion of the Use of Energy from Renewable Sources as part of the EU's new climate change package. In the Development Committee

In the Development Committee and as a member of the Joint Parliamentary Assembly, Fiona campaigns for development-friendly Economic Partnership Agreements and lobbies for regulations of international arms trade. She led the negotiations for ALDE on a report on China's Policy and its effects on Africa (2008). Read more about Fiona's work in the Development Committee.

In the Election Co-ordination Group

Angola

Fiona on election observation mission in Angola

  • In 2008, Fiona was head of the European Parliament delegation observing legislative elections in Angola. (Final report).

  • Fiona was Chief Observer on the European Union's Election Observation Mission to Togo (2007).

  • Fiona was a member of the election observation team in Haiti (2007), the Democratic Republic of Congo (2006) and Ethiopia (2005). She also visited the Democratic Republic of Congo with ALDE group colleagues to monitor the pre-election registration process (October 2005).

Temporary Committee on Climate Change (CLIM)

Fiona is very concerned about tackling climate change and has been involved in the negotiations around the new European Climate Change package.
